All that is left behind.
By David Milligan-Croft.
.
There is a ghost
of a cherry tree leaf
in my notebook,
from where I pressed it.
.
A memento
from a happier time
that I wanted to cherish,
no doubt.
.
The leaf must have
fallen out at some point –
how careless of me
to have lost you.
.
There is a faint trace
of red residue
left behind on the coarse paper.
It is allΒ
that is left behind.
.
Lovely.
I like to try to articulate what I find affecting in a lyric which moves me, and in yours it’s the quiet power of unvarnished statement and a delicate rhetorical touch. The simplicity has a cumulative force, and the conclusion tolls like a bell with the repetition of “left behind.”
Thank you for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully, I really appreciate it. I’m glad the ending resonated with you. I try to choose my words carefully. Hence ‘cherish’ to echo ‘cherry’. Thank you again ππ
I perceive the fruits of your choice (no pun intended!). Thanks for the dialog. Kind regards.
Lovely imagery.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
